Can't leave home?
Worried about limiting your dog's exercise?
Anxious about your dog becoming stressed?
Keen to avoid your dog becoming bored?
Bored dogs chews more, bark more, get under your feet more!
Scentwork to the rescue!
Scentwork provides positive mental stimulation.
In other words it gives your dog something fun to think about and pleasurable to do. To have a happily tired and relaxed dog makes for a happier home life.
You can achieve this without having to leave your home.
Scentwork can be done everywhere. You don't need acres of land, fancy training facilities or special access to unusual venues. All you need is your home. The smallest of homes can provide so much more scope for challenging and fun searches than you could ever imagine.
I've designed this course for you if you can't leave home, perhaps due to pandemic, illness or for any other reason beyond your choosing. This course is perfect for everybody who has taught their dog to search for a specific scent. I have days when the weather is so bad I just don't want to leave the house, or when I'm so busy I can't fit in another dog walk, or when my dog is on restricted exercise due to an injury or illness but when her mind is just as alert as ever.
Apart from the scented articles (remember, you can teach your dog to search for any safe scent), you don't need any special equipment. I will only be using things that can be found in the home or garden.
Each search concentrates on one room in the home. I take you through risk assessment (safety checks), showing how to reduce and avoid risk to keep both your dog and your home safe. I also show you at least two searches in each location to demonstrate various levels of challenge that you can use in your own searches. So whether your search team is foundation or expert level you'll find something to inspire and spark your scentwork creativity.
I give you lots of options for where to hide your target scent, how to deal with contamination, how to prevent boring repetition, how to plan searches to make the most of the available space (small space searches can be wonderfully and unexpectedly challenging) and even tips on how not to give away the hide when placing your own finds if you have to work alone.
In each section I show you searches with my own dogs to demonstrate different skill levels and different requirements according to the needs of each dog. Ettie is my 7 month old terrier mix who is very novice, Ella is my Jack Russell Terrier who is intermediate and Cherry my Labrador is the seasoned professional.

This was originally written as a six week course. But I've changed that to give you full access as soon as you enrol. Every section is a new room with new challenges. The final section sets searches where all that you have achieved can be brought together into a series of challenges and in one final epic search. Each section has a video lecture plus written notes that you can download. The videos and notes compliment each other but each includes information not found in the other. I've packed as much information in as I can which means that by the end of the course, not only will you have kept yourself and your dog busy and happy for six weeks or however long you choose to work through the course, but you will have expanded and/or improved your range of skills and knowledge.
"Have loved doing the scentwork courses. This one was excellent as you see Pam doing the searches with her own dogs. It gives you a great insight to handling skills and gave me lots of creative ideas."
- Sarah Stupart
"I have really enjoyed the content of the course especially as we are confined to our house. Even though we have done some practical courses you never stop learning and there are so many useful tips to learn to make sure the searches are challenging yet fun for the dogs. It builds such a bond with you and your dog. Thank you."
"Great idea to have a scentwork course to do at our own pace and at home. I have already recommended you to other dog owners!"
"Fantastic course, if you like working with your dog and getting them to do searching this is the best course by far"
"I just wanted to say thanks for the course. We have enjoyed it immensely. My boxers Lois and Mac love the searches. "
- Di Wild
As you can see from the course description, you can learn so much more than you've ever think possible from setting up searches at home. I've packed the course full of ideas, inspiration and observation. Pitch the level for you, your dog and your circumstances. You will see such a difference in your dog thanks to just a couple of searches. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions
As a professional dog trainer for 30+ years, I have used scentwork to help thousands of dogs work with their owners to be more attentive, less reactive, more relaxed, less agitated. As a universal skill that can be learned by all dogs and all owners, the flexibility, fast results and good old fashioned fun found in scentwork led me to form Talking Dogs Scentwork® in 2011.
Since then I've been working hard to keep up with demand, such is the interest in scentwork. I work hard to stay at the forefront of my profession, staying creative, pushing boundaries and confounding expectations of what pet dogs can do. As the first national provider of scentwork training for non-selected (pet) dogs in Great Britain, TDS has quickly grown into the go-to scentwork training provider, with the TDS Detector Dog manual proving more popular than I could have ever imagined, selling well all over the world, but particularly in the UK, Europe and USA. I specialise in teaching all breed types, all ages, all abilities (physical, mental and emotional) Combining my years as a professional drug detector dog handler for HM Customs with my experience as a pet dog training and behaviour consultant, I tailor my teaching to dogs who don't have jobs, those who have been selected as companions rather than tools of the trade.
I work full time teaching Talking Dogs Scentwork® at workshops. online, at conferences and with major organisations, including Dogs Trust, Puppy School, Victoria Stilwell and the prestigious Woof! Conference.
Some of my working highlights include:
- Drug Detector Dog Handler with HM Customs & Excise
- Sirius Puppy Trainer in association with Dr. Ian Dunbar
- Assistance Dog Trainer for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
- Behaviourist for Wood Green Animal Shelters
